Muscular System
Anatomy & Physiology Essentials · page 43
- Skeletal muscle is voluntary and striated; cardiac is involuntary, striated, heart only (intercalated discs); smooth is involuntary, non-striated
- Contraction pathway: nerve signal → NMJ → ACh → actin-myosin binding → sliding filaments; needs ATP + Ca++
- Ca++ binds troponin to expose actin sites for myosin
- Muscles attach via tendons (cord) or aponeurosis (flat sheet)
- Epaxial muscles and quadriceps are IM injection sites; quadriceps avoids sciatic nerve
